Uses of the S-DMS:

Normative data is provided to convert raw scores into Standard Scores and Percentile Ranks, as well as grade scores. Higher Standard Scores (i.e. increasingly positive deviations from the means) indicate enhanced math performance. Normed on 1,699 children, internal consistency and test-retest reliabilities of the total scores were in the mid .90s. Convergent validity with other commonly used math diagnostic tests and screeners were calculated at all grade levels.

The Slosson-Diagnostic Math Screener (S-DMS) allows for the description of an individual child’s basic math skills, comparing the child’s performance to their age/grade peers, and helps to identify students who are at risk for mathematics failure. In order for the S-DMS to be practical, it has been designed to be quickly administered, reliable, and consistent with many contemporary devices whose purpose is to deep-test. Sensitive to school-based realities, the S-DMS combines the power of a diagnostic assessment with the quickness and convenience of a screener. Professionals or para-professionals can easily attain an overall view for an entire class when group scored.

The S-DMS differs from many group administration math tests because student responses are in an open response, rather than a multiple choice format. This format reduces the effect of guessing on the child’s score.
